Endoscopy

Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic technique that allows one to image, assess and treat GI diseases (GI tract, biliary tree and pancreatic ducts) using a video camera attached to the end of a long, thin flexible tube inserted through the mouth or the anus.

The endoscopic procedures performed by Dr Purchiaroni are:

OESOPHAGOGASTRODUODENOSCOPY (OGD) UNDER SEDATION

OGD is a test which allows the GI endoscopist to look directly at the lining of the oesophagus, the stomach and around the first bend of the small intestine (duodenum) by inserting a flexible and thin scope through the mouth. During OGD it is possible to take biopsy samples according to the indication for examination. Biopsy samples are taken, for instance, to detect Helicobacter pylori infection and coeliac disease. During OGD it is also possible to remove gastric polyps.

COLONOSCOPY
UNDER SEDATION

Colonoscopy is a test which allows the GI endoscopist to directly examine the lining of the large bowel (the colon) and terminal ileum of the small intestine by inserting a flexible and thin tube through the anus. According to the indication for examination, during colonoscopy it is possible to take biopsy samples from the different colonic segments and to remove polyps.

ENDOSCOPIC
POLIPECTOMY

Polypectomy is the medical term for removing polyps from the stomach and the large intestine. Polyps removal can be performed through EMR technique (endoscopic mucosal resection), ESD technique (endoscopic submucosal dissection) or hybrid technique (EMR + ESD).
